Once upon a time, A group of 34 avid motorsport pioneers / mad men! Held a meeting in the Rising sun Public house at Penhow in November 1963 which resulted in both the formation of Penhow Jalopy Club and also a few Hangovers!! During this meeting an original set of rules where formulated in order to try and make the racing as fair and even as was practicable.
The clubs first race meeting was held on the 16th December 1963 and consisted of just three races, a general race, a ladies race and a wheelbender race. In the early years, challenge type matches were arranged with other organisations such as Magor young Farmers assoc and the Tredegar farmers Hunt. By the clubs first Annual general meeting, held the following year (Nov ‘64) the club had grown to an amazing 163 members. With the club going from strength to strength, Penhow soon became a prominent founder member of the British Jalopy association and eventually in 1976 joined NASA, the governing body of autograss. In 1982 Penhow change its name to ‘Penhow Autograss Car Racing club’. Throughout the years Penhow have been a very successful club both locally and nationally, with numerous junior national and senior national class champions, from the likes of Wimpy Walker through to the modern day Tim Harbor…… Who Knows may be you can continue this clubs great heritage, and become a future champion!!
